EMYR Huws is set to undergo a scan on the ankle injury that forced him to be stretchered off in Colchester United's 1-0 friendly defeat to Millwall.

The 28-year-old was injured following a challenge by Millwall defender Jake Cooper in the first half of the pre-season game, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Huws suffered swelling to his left ankle as a result of the tackle and is now expected to have a scan on Monday, to determine the full extent of the injury.

Colchester assistant head coach Joe Dunne said: "We're just waiting for a proper look.

"Looking at Emyr on the table in the physio room at half-time, it was pretty bad.

"But that's the initial and we'll give it a bit of time and see how he is over the next few hours and days.

"Initially, you fear because when you look at the tackle back and the pictures, it's not a nice one.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and everyone has to now get round him as a club and hopefully, he'll recover quickly and it's not as bad as first thought.

"When you're in pre-season, you don't want players to pick up things like calf and hamstring injuries.

"But this was an impact challenge and you don't really see them, in pre-season and it's on a good player.

"Emyr is getting back to fitness and he's had his injury worries but we just have to move forward now and make sure he's comfortable and that his healing process is right.

"It's one of them - sometimes they're not as bad as you first think but right now, it is a bad one and we just hope he's OK."

Dunne admitted Colchester were disappointed by the nature of Cooper's challenge, which resulted in Huws' injury.

However, he revealed Millwall manager Gary Rowett and his coaching staff acknowledged the poor nature of the tackle.

"We're disappointed with the challenge and you don't see many challenges like that in pre-season," said Dunne.

"I can only think that he was intensely trying to play the ball and obviously got his timing out and that sometimes happen in pre-season, when your timing is not quite there.

"If you were to turn it into a league fixture he (Jake Cooper) then goes and scores the goal.

"We're talking about match practice and it is what it is.

"We're just a bit disappointed and I have to pay great credit to Gary Rowett and his staff, who also said that they were disappointed with the challenge as well.

"Great respect to Millwall for that but unfortunately, it's our lad who's lying injured and we just wish him a speedy recovery."
