OSSAMA Ashley has revealed a call from his former boss Dmitri Halajko paved the way for his Colchester United move.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who has signed a one-year deal with the U’s, played under Halajko for West Ham United’s under-21s.

Halajko recently returned to Colchester as the club’s sporting director - and Ashley says their conversation ultimately led to his trial period at the JobServe Community Stadium, which has now resulted in a permanent move.

Ashley told Col U TV: “I obviously know Dmitri from West Ham – he used to be my manager.

“Once I got a call from him, we kind of discussed what it’s like down here and what they think of me.

“Once I came down, I also know (head of recruitment) Ross (Embleton) as well – I came across him at Leyton Orient so they know me and I knew of them.

“They asked me to come down so they could see what I’ve got and I’ve kind of done what I need to be doing.

"I like the ambition of the club and I know exactly what they want from me.

“I feel like I can provide that, so hopefully I can grow as much as you guys can.”

Ashley is looking to make an impression at Colchester, after landing a permanent deal with the League Two club.

The former AFC Wimbledon player is looking for game time, having made his only competitive appearance for the Hammers under-21s in their 1-0 defeat at Colchester in the Papa John's Trophy, last September.

It was a game to forget for Ashley, after he suffered a serious ankle injury just nine minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute in the group game.

"I'm a physical player, I get around the pitch, I'm very hardworking and I leave everything out there,” he said.

“I can probably give the team a good backburner as well, so that’s the main thing.

"I want to get as many games as possible and gain experience with the lads.

“I’m really looking to improve my game and do my best this season and see where we end up.

"The lads and the coaching staff have been great with me, and I'm excited to get started.”
