TIER scooter rides in Essex have passed one million rides, since launching in December of 2020.

The scheme that launched across Colchester, Chelmsford and Basildon has received a mix reception with some saying they are a good way to ease congestion and others saying they are a nuisance and lead to injuries.

Statistics released from Essex Police highlighted one death from an e-scooter related accident, as well as 80 injuries last year.

The scheme initially launched as Spin in 2020 and was taken over by TIER in June.

TIER introduced improved, safer scooters with phone charging capabilities, a larger front wheel, wider foot plate, dual suspension, indicators and dual drum brakes.

In total, 800 of their improved scooters were available across the three Essex locations, available to rent via an app.

Research conducted in late 2021 found that three quarters of Essex users were riding an e-scooter instead of a personal car at least a few times a month.

This means that the scooters have contributed to Essex County Council’s plan of a carbon neutral county by the year 2050.

Research also found that just under a third were riding e-scooters whilst going to and from public transport stops, highlighting that the trial is expanding the reach of existing public transport networks.

Georgia Yexley, general manager for UK and Ireland said: “We are extremely pleased to see how the people of Essex have taken to micro-mobility and are using e-scooters for everything from commuting or travelling to the shops to seeing friends and family.

“We are looking forward to supporting the next million rides, with a continued focus on ensuring our customers feel safe while riding and working with local councils to ensure e-scooters are providing the maximum benefit to Essex.

Peter Schwier, Essex County Council's Climate Czar, said: “This is a not just an impressive, but crucial, milestone for the county of Essex as we continue to work towards becoming a net zero county by 2050.

“Our Climate Action plan, created in response to the Essex Climate Action Commission’s report Net Zero: Making Essex Carbon Neutral, highlights the importance of adopting sustainable and active travel across Essex.”
