TINY festival-goers had “the best day ever” and enjoyed the wonders of live music after a lengthy line-up of performers visited their school.

Lexden Primary School, in Trafalgar Road, Colchester, held its own music festival featuring a host of professional artists.

Everything from Kirsty Mclean, oud player Qusai Aljaramani, and African drummer Hassan Lotfi to the Beacon Hill Ensemble played at the music event of the summer.

Much to the amazement of the school’s students, deputy head teacher Zoe Emson-Sewell also wowed the crowd by playing the flute.

In addition to the performances, vicar the Rev Matt Simpkins also led a series of workshops before the musically-talented children took to the stage during a special assembly.

Year 4 students also played the doods, while Year 1 pupils performed songs.

We also had 2 children playing piano pieces they had learnt with their piano teacher and a year 5 pupil  and parent who sang a classical duet.

Joanne Platten, music co-ordinator at Lexden Primary School, said bringing the joys of music to her students made for an enriching experience for everyone.

She said: “We held our first music festival and it was a wonderful day of musical celebration for our children.

“The festival was an opportunity for our children to experience music they wouldn't normally see – the children and staff had an incredible time.

“We enjoyed performances in the morning and the celebration afternoon was a chance to share the children's musical talent.

“We are so incredibly proud of all our children at Lexden.

“A huge thank you to Roman River friends and funders for generously supporting the education and community outreach.”

Dr Lauren Spooner, a volunteer for the Roman River music organisation, also said the festival proved a hit with the young gig-goers who described it as being “so fun.”

She added: “It was a fantastic day at Lexden Primary School, introducing children to music which they may not have heard of before.

“The headteacher Alex Candler told the children all you have to do is enjoy this and they certainly did.

“The musicians were superb, and it was lovely to see children smiling, singing and dancing.”
