A TENANT claims their kitchen is being "invaded by flies" as a result of an overflowing rubbish area which “regularly stinks” and has been described as a health hazard.

Residents living at Timber Hill, Colchester, which is owned by the Eastlight Housing Association, have raised concerns over bin storage site.

According to Lee Scordis, Colchester councillor for Old Heath and the Hythe, the overflowing bins have plagued the area in the past and are doing so once again.

A planning application has now been submitted with a view of moving the storage block to a more suitable location.

It is currently located next to a property’s kitchen and, in addition to frequently throwing up some questionable aromas, has also become a hotspot for fly-tipping.

Mr Scordis said: “This has been an ongoing issue for a number of years and Eastlight really owe their tenants much better than this.

“This bin area regularly stinks and despite requests for a deep clean, recycling bins, and CCTV to spot who is fly-tipping, Eastlight have failed on all three counts.

“This bin store is overlooked by someone's kitchen window, whose home is invaded by flies so this is also a public health issue.

“I welcome plans to move the bin store but why has it taken years to put in a planning application to do this?"

Eastlight Housing Association bosses have now confirmed they have taken action.

A spokesman said: "Following reports of fly-tipping at the bin store in Timber Hill, Colchester, we cleared the area last week and have appointed a contractor to complete weekly checks to ensure rubbish does not build up again.

"Last month, we consulted with Eastlight residents in Timber Hill and Cross Cut Court and with their support, we have now submitted a planning application to Colchester Council to relocate and expand the bin storage area."
