PETROL prices may result in people avoiding driving their cars, but for many, driving is still a necessity, and the increase in fuel costs is a real worry for those who have no option but to commute by automobile.

There are only a couple of petrol stations left in Colchester which charge less than £1.90 per litre for fuel, which is the cheapest you are likely to find currently.

To show just how much prices are rising by, the most affordable petrol stations in town this week would have been among the most expensive forecourts a fortnight ago.

Here is a round-up of some of the stations to avoid as drivers look to save each time they go to the pumps.

1st – BP (Ipswich Road): 197.9p per litre

Often the most expensive filling station in Colchester, 50 litres of fuel here costs just shy of £100. The final figure coming off your bank balance for a full tank is £98.95.

2nd – BP (Harwich Road): 194.9p per litre

Another BP petrol station near Colchester, this forecourt off the A120 is also at the wrong end of the price scale. 50 litres here costs £97.45.

3rd – Co-Op (Peartree Road), and Tesco (Highwoods and Hythe): 192.9p per litre

For the most part, major supermarket retailers offer fuel at cheaper prices, but this trend is not followed by Tesco or the Co-Op this week. A 50-litre tank costs £96.45 at any three of these filling stations.

5th – Sainsbury’s (Stanway): 191.9p per litre

This Sainsbury’s sold the most affordable fuel in Colchester two weeks ago. This week, however, it is nowhere close to being top of the leader board. £95.95 is the cost for a 50-litre tank here.
