ESSEX Police says its officers have made plans to keep people safe amid fears of a protest on a major road.

Protestors are expected to cause chaos when they block the A12 in a campaign to draw attention to ever-increasing fuel prices.

Disgruntled motorists have pledged to create a blockade at junction 28, adjacent to the JobServe Community Stadium, on Monday.

A poster circulated on social media states the action is to “stand up to fuel prices UK wide” and encourages protestors to gridlock the road.

Unleaded petrol reached a record 191.05p a litre on Sunday, while diesel hit eyewatering new highs of 199.09p on Saturday, meaning a 55-litre family car would cost £109.42 to fill up.

An Essex Police spokesman said the force is aware of the details of the planned protest and is keeping an eye on the situation.

He said: “We have been made aware of social media posts relating to a potential protest on Monday, July 4.

“We are monitoring the event and have made plans to minimise disruption, keep people safe, and keep Essex moving.”

Mile End councillor Martin Goss told the Gazette: “I totally understand people’s right to protest but this isn’t the right approach. I would urge people to not get involved."
