COLCHESTER United have been linked with a move for Max Kretzschmar.

The U's are said to be one of a number of clubs tracking the midfielder, according to Sky Sports News.

Kretzschmar is a free agent after choosing to leave National League side Woking, upon the expiry of his contract on July 1.

The 28-year-old, who scored 13 goals and made nine assists for the Cards last season, is also said to be interesting Barrow along with several National League clubs.

Kretzschmar's departure from Woking was announced earlier this month, after the two parties were unable to agree terms on a new contract at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

Kretzschmar spent five years in Southampton's academy before leaving at the age of 16 to join Wycombe Wanderers, on a two-year deal.

He then joined Woking in the summer of 2016, helping them reach the Emirates FA Cup third round and secure National League South promotion in 2018/19.

Kretzschmar won Woking's Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards in 2021/22.

In total, he made 171 appearances for Woking, scoring 46 times.

Colchester are yet to make a signing this summer, ahead of the forthcoming 2022-23 League Two season.

The U's are keen to make new additions, with newly-appointed head of recruitment Ross Embleton working in liaison with head coach Wayne Brown, technical director Steve Ball and director of football Tony Humes to bolster their options.

Colchester's midfield options were reduced last week after Brendan Wiredu left the club to join Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee.

The U's are due to play their first pre-season friendly this weekend when they travel to play Reading at the Championship club's training ground, in a behind-closed-doors match.

Colchester begin their new league campaign on July 30 when they travel to play Northampton Town.
