FUN on the high seas is guaranteed with the return of the Wivenhoe Regatta.

The event, which dates back to 1891, offers thrills and spills both on land and sea.

A special event will launch the regatta on Friday July 1 starting at 7.30pm when runners will push their "babies" in a pram race.

The pushers will take the load in a wheeled vehicle of their making across a course around Lower Wivenhoe.

Team members will have to drink a half pint of beer at each pub along the way.

Entry is free and prizes are awarded to be best fancy dressed team.

Sailing and rowing will remain at the heart of the regatta which starts on Saturday July 2 from noon until late.

There will also be a wide variety of shoreside activities with stalls lining the quay.

A brass band will play during the day, providing a live music for the event.

A wide variety of children’s activities have been included from a traditional Punch and Judy show to a visit from The Blackwater Pirates, who will be there to show off their treasure.

Children will also be able to enjoy a special pirate trail this year, finishing at a treasure chest of pirate gifts.

The main event of the day is the annual raft race, which promises to be an entertaining centrepiece of the afternoon.

Competitors will have to create their own raft, with the intention of staying afloat for the duration of the race.

Event organiser John Moores said: “The regatta has plenty of stalls, lots to see on and off the water.

"This year is the first time for three years and we thought we’d try something different, making a trail for the kids this year.

“It’s greatly loved by the community and after a two year gap, there are a lot of people looking forward to it.

“A lot of effort has gone into providing a great day out for everyone. Fingers crossed for great weather on the day.”
