BRENDAN Wiredu has left Colchester United and joined League One outfit Fleetwood Town.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who made 75 appearances for the U's across his two spells with the club, has joined The Cods for a six-figure undisclosed fee.

He has signed a three year contract for newly-appointed Scott Brown's side.

Colchester United Director of Football Tony Humes told the club website: “Brendan was always one to wear his heart on his sleeve and gave everything he could for the club.

“The move to Fleetwood presents a good opportunity for Brendan to test himself at a higher level and we would like to thank him for his efforts in a Colchester United shirt, and wish him well for his future footballing career."

Wiredu first joined Colchester on a loan from Charlton Athletic at the start of the 2019/20 season, playing under John McGreal.

He then joined the U's on a permanent deal in early 2021, impressing with his combative performances in the centre of midfield.

Wiredu picked up runners-up spot in Colchester's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards in 2021.

He was also one of the leading contenders for the award in the 2021-22 season, helping them move away from the League Two relegation zone under Wayne Brown.

Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley believes their capture of Wiredu is statement of intent  ahead of the new season.

He told the club website: “It’s a huge statement of intent I think. Last season was a year we don’t want to ever have to go through again.

"Avoiding relegation by the skin of our teeth isn’t an experience I’ve had before, and I certainly don’t intend to again.

“That’s why we are determined to put it right this summer. The business we’ve done so far has been excellent, and the capture of Brendan shows what we are about again going forward.

“Brendan was one of the best midfielders in League Two last season and was being watched by a number of clubs in League One and the Championship, we’ve paid a big sum to get him here and feel we can help him develop into a top midfielder who we sell in the future.

“Our scouts flagged Brendan up as a stand-out up-and-coming player in League Two, and the data backs that up.

"He’s right at the top of the statistics for ball-winning and other areas needed for a player in his position. We are really delighted to have secured him."
