POTENTIAL changes in transport arrangements for pupils attending a school for children with additional needs are putting the welfare of children at risk, parents have said.

When the new school term begins in September, the transport provider for children attending Lexden Springs School which caters for children with special educational needs and disabilities may change.

But parents have said any change in drivers and routine risks upsetting their children’s daily equilibrium.

They argue routine is key to allowing their children to focus and feel comfortable in their surroundings.

Katie Brunton, whose four-year-old son Noah attends Lexden Springs.

Noah’s journey to Lexden Springs, which takes approximately 45 minutes from the family home in Braintree and is crucial in ensuring Noah can concentrate and communicate effectively throughout the day.

She said: “Noah struggles with many aspects of life he’s had two brain surgeries, has sensory processing difficulties, and is completely non-verbal.

“He’s a happy boy, but he has his own battles he has to face every day.”

Mrs Brunton claims there has been no consultation with staff at Lexden Springs, or parents of pupils at the school.

“All the children will lose their driver and escort,” Mrs Brunton said.

“For some of these children, they’ve been going to Lexden Springs for seven years and have had the same driver the entire time.

“It’s all about stability [for the children] change is a huge thing.

“It takes longer for them to comprehend what’s going on around them they depend on routine and everything is built around stability.”

Mrs Brunton says if there is a change in provider it would show “a lack of concern” from County Hall for the children’s needs.

“My biggest worry would be we would be under a council that doesn’t care about its children,” she said.

“For them not to take [this matter] seriously would be completely corrupt.

“I would like to think this can be reversed.”

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We are unable to comment on this at this point in time as the tender award process is currently in standstill.”
