TACKLING flooding at the Hythe is a priority for Colchester Council's new administration – with bosses vowing to work with other agencies to uncover and fund a solution.

Fed-up car trader Dave Smith, who regularly commutes through troubled Haven Road when undertaking work at his Colchester firm Auto Trade Link, has seen his business suffer due to repeated flooding.

A petition he started calling for a pump to remove water as a short-term solution has attracted around 150 signatures.

The pump would come with a £100,000 price tag.

Deputy leader Adam Fox sits on the Hythe Taskforce, which comprises councillors, Colchester MP Will Quince and other agencies.

He said the group is due to meet again within the next two weeks.

He added: “Now is the time those agencies have got to come together, the borough council is one of those, Essex County Council is another, Anglian Water and the Environment Agency.

“If the short-term solution is a pump, then we will help.”

Council leader David King said: “We will work on the data and the evidence, but it absolutely matters that we signal a willingness, if it’s right, to put our hand in our pocket.”

But the cabinet confirmed a long-term solution the “complex” issue would involve working with consultants, engineers and other partners to ensure the right move is made.
