THE leader of a business organisation has said Colchester will reap the benefits from being named a city as part of the Queen’s jubilee celebrations.

Denise Rossiter, who is the chief executive officer of the Essex Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ECCI), said investment in the economy around Colchester was likely to increase after being granted city status.

Colchester had previously bid to become a city in 1992 and 2000, but the bids were withdrawn after a public consultation.

Unsuccessful bids followed in 2002 and 2012 as part of the Queen’s golden and diamond jubilees.

Denise Rossiter said: “This will bring a range of economic, reputational and social benefits for the entire region.

“Gaining city status not only brings a symbol of pride for the local people and businesses, but positive effects in the long-term including opportunities for inward investment that will boost the local economy.”

Other figures involved in business have welcomed the announcement that Colchester is to become a city, with councillor Martin Leatherdale, centre manager for the town’s Lion Walk shopping centre, saying five new retailers will enter the city.

Colchester is also going to receive a royal visit when its city status is made official.
