A YOUNG schoolgirl has completed a fundraising walk in memory of her late headteacher, who many considered to be a “wonderful woman”.

Poppy Cockram, nine, trekked around Mersea Island in aid of St Helena Hospice, the care complex which looked after Suzy Ryan in her final moments.

Mrs Ryan was the principal at Fingringhoe Primary School up until 2020 and died in 2021 after tragically losing her battle with cancer.

As all good teachers do, she left a lasting impression on students and parents alike and her death was felt by the entire school community.

Honouring her memory Poppy, who was one of the many pupils who admired Mrs Ryan, embarked on a 13.5 mile charity walk alongside her auntie Abbie Ayling.

She raised an impressive £635 for St Helena Hospice in the process as a way of thanking the hospice’s professionals for the way they helped the inspiring head teacher.

Mum Carly Cockram, 32, from Colchester, said: “She did all of the walk in one go and it took her six hours to complete.

“She was exhausted even just after three miles but refused to give up and carried on for the next ten miles with only a 15 minute break time.

“She started at Miss Ryan’s memorial bench and walked round Mersea Island before finishing back at the bench - safe to say her legs were like jelly when she finished.

“I am so proud of Poppy and she decided on her own she would raise money for St Helena Hospice in memory of Mrs Ryan.

“She has reached her target now but she would love to raise even more money for the charity.”

Since her untimely death Mrs Ryan has been described as everything from a role model and loving soul to the happiest and kindest person.

“She was a wonderful woman and made some big improvements at the school and had a real connection with all of the children,” added Carly.

“She was a Mersea Island resident where she enjoyed running in the park run and sailing in her own time.

“All of the locals knew of her and she was a real face in the community.”
