WHILST having some sympathy with National Grid which is forced to cope with the results of the Government’s net zero policy, a long line of 50m high pylons through the East Anglian countryside cannot be the right approach.
National Grid’s own documentation seems me to to imply that local requirements can be met by reinforcing existing structures.
The new line is required to export electricity produced off (wind power) or adjacent to (nuclear) the coast out of the region. This being the case, an undersea line off the coast down to Tilbury is surely the way forward long term.
It may not be the cheapest approach short term, but we can all think of developments which seemed to make economic sense at the time which are regretted in the long term.
Let us not add industrialising the East Anglian countryside to the list.
