LEARNER drivers in Colchester are more likely to be involved in road accidents than any of their fellow learners in Britain, a data has shown.

The statistics follow a recent study conducted by Bill Plant Driving School which found out of Colchester’s 46,424 provisional licence holders in 2020, 117 were involved in road accidents.

It means around 25 learner drivers in every 10,000 are involve in collisions in Colchester, which is the highest in the UK – ahead of second placed Guildford and third placed Preston.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the Department for Transport recorded a substantial drop in the number of road traffic accidents.

In 2020, there were a total of 115,584 road traffic accidents UK-wide, down 25 er cent from the previous number in 2019.

Although Colchester had the highest proportion of learner driver accidents, other areas of the UK had very low numbers of collisions involving provisional licence holders.

In 2020, Peterborough recorded only six road accidents involving drivers with a provisional licence.

Proportionally, only 0.27 of learner drivers were involved in accidents per 10,000, comfortably below Colchester, which had 25 learner drivers involved in accidents per 10,000.

Other areas with low accident rates included Darlington and Kilmarnock.
