A FUNDRAISING project launched in aid of refugees fleeing their war torn homeland is on the brink of hitting £20,000 – but more money is still needed.

Colchester To Ukraine: Humanitarian Aid Campaign, which was kick-started last month, has so far generated £18,500 in donations.

However, in order to despatch the first lorry load of vital aid to those who have left Ukraine, and are suffering as a result, a further £6,500 is needed.

If the funding can be found, essential meals, collected by the Lion Walking Shopping Centre, will be delivered to roughly 100,000 people through the Surya Food's network.

Martin Leatherdale, Colchester councillor and Lion Walk shopping centre manager, said: “This is the Colchester community and the unique capability of our community.

“The more the campaign grows, the more we raise and the more we can send.”

In addition to Mr Leatherdale, rhe scheme is being spearheaded by mayor Robert Davidson and the Dulai family, owners of Surya Food Group and The George Hotel.

To donate essential items to the cause, such as blankets, sleeping bags and torches visit the shopping centre’s drop-off site, next to Primark.
