"Unsavoury" scenes broke out at the end of a cricket match in West Yorkshire - including an alleged assault on a player by a supporter.

Bradford Premier League team Hanging Heaton, from between Batley and Dewsbury, were playing away at Honley, near Holmfirth, when tensions boiled over at the conclusion of a tight game in the Heavy Woollen Cup.

The incident, which is being investigated by police, is understood to have involved a Honley spectator and a Hanging Heaton player, with the player subsequently receiving hospital treatment for a serious facial injury.

Honley Cricket Club said it was carrying out its own investigation, adding that the spectator involved in the incident had been "banned indefinitely."

The club added that its thoughts were with the injured Hanging Heaton player, as they wished him a "full and speedy recovery."

Honley won the fixture by three wickets after the visitors posted a competitive total.

The Huddersfield Cricket League said it was "aware of unsavoury and disappointing events that took place during and after the closely fought Heavy Woollen Cup cricket match between Honley CC and Hanging Heaton CC last Sunday afternoon 8th."

A statement from the league added: "HCL is cooperating with the Heavy Woollen Cup Committee to fully investigate these matters as thoroughly and promptly as possible.

"An alleged assault of a Hanging Heaton player by a Honley supporter that apparently took place after the match had ended is subject, in the first instance, of a police investigation.

"In the meantime HCL wishes to record its disappointment at these events that risks tarnishing the good name of cricket, the Huddersfield Cricket League and its Clubs. The HCL deplores any form of aggressive, abusive, or anti-social behaviour that undermines the proud traditions of the spirit of cricket.

"HCL is continuing to work with the Heavy Woollen Cup Committee to finalise the investigation and determine appropriate disciplinary sanctions."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to a report of an alleged assault following the conclusion of the match at Honley Cricket Club in Far End Lane.
