A TEENAGER from Essex has appeared in court after being charged with rape.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged by police following an alleged incident in Wigan earlier this month.

Officers were called to an address in the town at 1.55am on April 18 following reports a woman, 18, had allegedly been raped.

Manchester Police, which is leading the investigation, says the woman is being supported by specialist officers.

The teenager from Essex charged in connection appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court on Saturday.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Bolton Crown Court on May 30.

Police say a 17-year-old boy from Bedfordshire - who also cannot be named for legal reasons - has also been charged with rape.

He was due to make his first court appearance at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court yesterday.
