I WAS interested to read Bob Russell’s and Mark Goacher’s letters, regarding the number of cars in town.
Bob Russell is a very decent and genial chap, but his views on cars and cycle paths belong to a bygone era.
The fact is that there are far too many cars in town and we need drastic action.
I did a bit of a Bob Russell thing yesterday and counted the number of cars on Clingoe Hill driven without passengers.
In one stretch, I counted a line of 20 cars with one driver and no passengers.
There should be law enforced incentives introduced to stop this. The issue of pollution caused by cars on Brook Street is symptomatic of the problem.

Unless we can reduce the number of cars entering the town centre, this will only get worse.
We need better integrated cycle lanes from North Station, including Dutch-style roundabouts.
We also need better parking facilities out of town and good public transport, especially for those who do not have the luxury of a car.
Most important of all, if we can actively discourage car use, it would benefit the local economy, people’s health, and the environment.
