AN ambitious community project kick-started to help those suffering as a result of the war in Ukraine has already generated thousands of pounds.

Colchester To Ukraine: Humanitarian Aid Campaign was officially launched at the Mayor of Colchester’s Best of British event held at the town hall on Saturday.

The scheme is being spearheaded by mayor Robert Davidson, councillor Martin Leatherdale and the Dulai family, owners of Surya Food Group and The George Hotel.

The aim is to deliver much-needed humanitarian support directly from the community of Colchester to refugees in need in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Gazette:

Following the launch at the town hall, located in High Street, Colchester, an impressive £3,000 has already been raised for the cause.

Many essential items, such as blankets, sleeping bags and torches have also already been donated at the Lion Walk Shopping Centre’s drop-off site, next to Primark.

Mr Leatherdale, who is also the centre manager of Lion Walk, said: “Thank you for your incredible support.

“This project is totally dependent on the community of Colchester and the contribution we can all make.”

The next fundraiser for the campaign will be held during the Our Colchester BID awards ceremony, taking place on May 4 at Colchester’s town hall.
