LIFEBOAT volunteers were called to action when ten people who had gone for a walk became cut off by the tide.

West Mersea RNLI launched shortly after 5pm on Saturday and headed to assist those in trouble on Northey Island, off Maldon.

A spokesman said: “All ten people were safely transferred off the island and landed at Maldon, before the lifeboat returned to station and was made ready for service.”
