A UNIQUE sporting event will see hundreds of runners pound the pavements against a glorious backdrop of animals from around the world.

The Colchester Zoo Stampede will take place on May 15, starting in the heart of the legendary attraction as the likes of rhinos, zebras and elephants look on.

The 10km race will then lead participants down Fountain Lane and round to Whitehouse Farm Road before passing through Hardy’s Green.

The runners will then head onto Maldon Road before finishing up back at Colchester Zoo, which is set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes and home to over 260 species.

Those entering the race will be given a special chip which will time how long the course takes them to complete, free race photos and a unique themed medals.

Road runners will also be given free entry to Colchester Zoo following the ever-popular event and a range of other goodies.

The cost of taking part is £32 or £40 with a T-shirt, while groups of six runners can also sign-up for a total of £140.
