A BIG-name pizza chain has withdrawn plans to open a new eatery in Colchester High Street.

Fireaway wanted to open a new restaurant in the town as part of its huge expansion plans laid out in 2021.

A series of planning applications submitted by Jack Kenworthy sought after installing new signage featuring the Fireaway brand and a new shopfront on a former opticians in High Street.

But the plans have now been withdrawn without further comment, according to Colchester Council’s planning portal.

It comes as another damaging blow to the future of Colchester’s High Street after food giant Marks and Spencer announced it will be leaving the town centre after almost 100 years of trading.

And this week it was revealed the Next High Street store has also closed, while the future of clothing behemoth H&M is also clouded in doubt.

However, bosses at the Colchester store say they have no intention of leaving.
