POLICE have launched an investigation after arsonists set light to a shed and damaged a greenhouses in the latest vandal attack on allotments in Colchester.

Allotments in Rowhedge were targeted three times in a matter of weeks with the hooligans taunting the horticulturalists whose sanctuary they desecrated.

And on Saturday, plot owners arrived to a scene of devastation as vandals wreaked havoc overnight at the Grants Meadow Allotment in Recreation Road, Colchester.

Essex Police stated it was called to the scene at 10.30am following reports of damage, and has now urged any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: “It was reported a shed was set alight, and damage was caused to greenhouses and gardening accessories.

“We need anyone who saw anything or has dash cam footage to contact us.”

The Gazette understands every plot at the allotment was vandalised to varying degrees, with some residents having their plastic polytunnels slashed and their plants and seedlings destroyed.

The vandals also set alight to a large shed which contained gardening tools and children’s toys, while a water butt attached to it subsequently melted.

The shed’s owner also revealed she had a Stanley knife taken and a strimmer which was kept locked inside too.

Old Heath councillor Lee Scordis encouraged people with any information to support the police, saying he felt disappointed at those responsible.

He said: “It’s really frustrating, petty crime. People work really hard on their allotments, it’s something they take pride in.

“This is another case of mindless idiots ruining something for everyone which is just really sad.

“I would say anyone who sees something like this happening should contact the police, especially if they have any evidence suggesting who it was.

“This isn’t the first incident like this in our area, so it will be interesting to see if they are connected.”
