AN inspiring young fundraiser has dedicated herself to helping the terrified children having to flee a war-torn European country with their families.

Maddison Shellum, 13, from Colchester, has been collecting essential items and vital aid for her Ukrainian Shoebox Appeal, creating more than 100 boxes.

She came up with the idea after seeing the horrifying atrocities being bestowed upon Ukraine citizens following an invasion by Russian soldiers.

Forced out of their homes and displaced as a result of the attack, many are now fleeing to the UK and surrounding countries to find safety.

In order to fulfil her ambition Maddison and her mum Amanda enlisted the help of members of Colchester’s 25th Guide Unit, who helped pack the boxes.

The St Anne’s Youth Club also got involved, in addition to students from Maddison’s school, the Colchester Academy, in Hawthorn Avenue.

Mum Amanda said: “We were watching the news and started to have a conversation about the devastation and we said we should do something.

“So, we used social media platforms to ask for donations and shoe boxes and we received loads of donations.

“I am pleased to say we were able to take 106 shoe boxes down to Anti-Loo Roll Brigade’s hub in Colchester.

“I am super proud of Maddison and our local community for all their achievements.”
