WAYNE Brown insists Colchester United still need to rack up more points in order to secure their League Two status.

The U’s lie 11 points above the relegation zone with seven games remaining, following their 1-0 triumph over promotion-chasing Tranmere Rovers.

Colchester enjoyed a good weekend, claiming a vital victory and seeing the bottom-four sides all lose.

However, interim boss Brown has stressed that they will not be taking their foot off the gas any time soon, in their pursuit of Football League safety.

Brown said: “We still need points on the board.

“We still want to win games of football, of course we do.

“Our approach will be exactly the same.

“We need to take the Tranmere result into this week and the performances from the last two games.

“It takes us on to the next game, a tough game away from home against Harrogate.

“We’ll go there full of belief and full of confidence off the back of three points, to try and win a game of football.

“It’s another opportunity to get three points.”

Gazette:

Colchester are not in action tonight, with their next game at Harrogate Town on Saturday.

However, there are still some important games taking place near the foot of the League Two table this evening.

Oldham Athletic, who lie second from bottom and three points from safety after six successive losses, host a Leyton Orient side who have enjoyed a revival under new boss Richie Wellens and now sit in 17th spot, 15 points above the drop zone.

Rochdale, who are 20th and a place below Colchester – nine points above the relegation zone - entertain Carlisle United who like Orient, have pulled away from danger under new boss Paul Simpson and are now 18th in the table.

Gazette:

The results of the two matches tonight will have implications for the League Two survival battle but U’s interim boss Brown insists he is only concentrating on his own team’s plight.

“Other results don’t concern me,” he added.

“What does concern me is that we do our very best to try and achieve the three points.

“Thankfully, we’ve done that and if we keep doing that, the rest will look after itself.”
