AN exciting new piece of artwork appeared in Colchester town centre today to mark a visionary redevelopment.

Professional mural artist, Dan Kitchener has been commissioned to a piece of temporary artwork to mark the St Nicholas Square project.

Residents of Colchester can enjoy the work until the end of April after it was completed by Mr Kitchener, who has painted in some of the biggest cities around the world.

This commission, appearing on the side of the former Co-op building in St Nicholas Square, is part of Colchester Council’s pop-up art project, designed to bring awareness to the range of capital works taking place in the borough.

And sharp-eyed locals might have seen the artist, who was worked with top stars such as Kylie Minogue, Miley Cyris and Lenny Kravitz, working incognito at the site over last weekend.

He believes in keeping the creative process private, taking all his own reference shots, and creating every aspect of his murals without assistants or teams.

The artist has worked his way around the world to become one of the leading figures in the street art world.

With his instantly recognized style, he has painted huge murals globally including Tokyo, Hong Kong, USA, Europe and the UK.

Leader of Colchester Council, Paul Dundas said: “I am really pleased to have an artist of Dan Kitchener’s calibre featuring on the new art trail.

“I’ve no doubt his exciting work will help drive footfall to the town centre, benefitting the retail and hospitality businesses in the local area.

“This is a great way to celebrate the forthcoming development at the adjacent St. Nicholas Square.”

The artist’s street painting forms one of six temporary artistic interventions taking place throughout Colchester late this month.

Other sites include Queen Street, Northern Gateway Sports Park, St Marks Community Centre, Stanway Community Centre and Greenstead.

Residents can keep an eye out on social media and the counci’s Updating Colchester website to find out when and where the art will pop-up, as well as downloading a route map to explore the projects.

“I’m excited to see the whole trail come together and would encourage people to come and take a look for themselves,” added Mr Dundas.
