A HEALTH leader has urged vulnerable people to step forward and get vaccinated against Covid-19 amid soaring cases.

From yesterday, everyone aged 75 years and above and those aged 12 and above who are severely immuno-suppressed can go to a walk-in clinic in north east Essex for their second Covid-19 booster dose.

These groups of people, along with all care home residents, are deemed at a much higher risk of developing severe Covid symptoms.

It comes as health bosses worry the immunity these people have from their autumn vaccination may not provide adequate future protection.

The North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group says care homes are being contacted to arrange second booster doses for residents, and other eligible people can expect to be contacted by the NHS in the coming weeks.

People in these eligible groups will need to have a six month gap since their last vaccination.

Chief executive of Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System Dr Ed Garratt said: “The continuing rise in Covid-19 virus cases in our community and in hospital admissions highlights how important it is for anyone eligible for vaccination to come forward.

“We know how important vaccination is, and the success of the programme so far has enabled us to see loved ones again, for businesses to open up and for us to enjoy the freedom to socialise with family and friends.

“We need to continue with our efforts in tackling Covid, so do please come forward, whether you’re eligible for a second booster, or are still to have a first, second or third jab or booster dose.

“From April 4, we’ll be extending the vaccination programme even further, inviting healthy five to 11-year-olds to receive the vaccine.

“You’ll be made welcome at our walk-in clinics and if you have any questions or concerns call the vaccination helpline on 0344 257 3961.”

Since the vaccination programme began, more than 2.2 million vaccinations have been administered in Suffolk and north east Essex.
