CHARITIES have been recognised for their work at a set of prestigious awards.

Four Colchester-based charities were supported at the latest High Sheriffs’ Awards, which recognise community initiatives which address crime, community safety and anti-social behaviour.

Abberton Rural Training was given £2,000 to run women-only craft and horticulture sessions for survivors of domestic abuse.

Beacon House Ministries got a grant of £1,500 to support the advocacy service working with ex-offenders who are homeless.

CARA Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse received £3,000 to cover room hire for counselling sessions for sexual abuse survivors.

And African Families in the UK CI received £3,000 for its work supporting young people from Africa and other ethnic minorities in Colchester.

High Sheriff of Essex Simon Brice said: “It is wonderful so many people were able to celebrate the achievements of our amazing voluntary and community groups.
