RESIDENTS living near to the scene of an attempted rape reported to have taken place in an alleyway say they no longer feel safe in Colchester.

Essex Police cordoned off a walk-through in the Campion Road area of Colchester on Monday night and remained at the scene until Tuesday morning.

It has since transpired officers were meticulously inspecting the area after receiving a report of an attempted rape.

The victim said the terrifying incident occurred at about 10pm on February 10.

Gazette:

Residents who live nearby have voiced their concerns after spotting the police cordon and being alerted to the nature of the investigation.

Clair Chamberlain, who has lived in Colchester for six years, said: “I saw police cars and the alleyway was tapped up at both ends.

“It is so sad, what is Colchester coming to? I feel so lucky I have a dog to walk with because I do not feel safe here anymore.

“Unfortunately, the world is a cruel place but it can be so scary, especially hearing about attempted rape.”

Tanya de Nijs said it was worrying such an incident occurred so close to her home.

She added: “It is shocking to be honest. I’m naturally quite an anxious person and don’t answer the door at night and it’s for reasons like this.

“Everyone wants to feel safe where they live without having to worry about the actions of others.

“I hope the person is OK. Crime here seems to be getting worse.”

Another resident only moved to the area last week but is already frightened for the safety of his daughter.

Speaking anonymously he said: “It’s not so much about how I feel, it is what my little girl would feel if she saw the police there.”

A spokesman said: “Incidents like this are rare and specialist detectives are investigating and the victim is being supported by specialist officers.”
