LATEST works by a Colchester-based artist are going on display in a museum as they showcase his paintings to the public.

Chappell Galleries is displaying the works of Charles Debenham, which includes various paintings of Colchester and its surrounding areas.

Charles, now 88, was born in Colchester and attended classes at the Colchester School of Art during his youth.

He has lived and painted in and around Essex all his life, and now works mainly from home in his studio in Great Horkesley.

He continues to paint outside on the spot on a regular basis but doesn’t go out everyday anymore due to ill health.

Chappell Galleries has supported and shown Charles’ paintings for more than 30 years, and the latest exhibit – ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ordinary’ – showcases his latest 38 paintings from scenes in villages and towns Essex and Suffolk.

There are familiar locations from North Essex, including Dovercourt, Mistley, Wivenhoe and West Mersea.

There are also some recognisable locations from Colchester, such as Harwich Road, and the High Street amongst the paintings.

The exhibition opens from March 12 from 12pm, to April 10 at 5pm, and can be viewed by appointment on Wednesday to Sundays from 10am to 5pm.
