A LEADING councillor has welcomed increased patrols by police officers in a bid to tackle a growing problem with anti-social behaviour.

Concerns are growing among Halstead residents amid noticeable issues with anti-social incidents in the town.

Halstead councillor Garry Warren says there are a number of ongoing problems involving anti-social groups vandalising property, including cars and shops.

Drug dealing has also been reported at the town’s Butler Road car park and anti-social behaviour has forced the Elizabeth Courtauld Surgery to install CCTV.

On social media, the surgery said they “have had lots of anti-social behaviour out of hours at the surgery recently and have now had CCTV installed at great expense”.

Mr Warren said: “There have been several shop windows broken as well as damage to cars.

“I think that the problem was exacerbated over half term but has been an ongoing issue for several months.

“When these groups are approached by residents, they are often met with abuse. This is completely unacceptable, and we would encourage anybody witnessing such behaviour to report it to the police.

“We have CCTV cameras around the town, car parks and in the Public Gardens, and we will pass on any footage to the police.

“It has also been noticed that drug dealing is taking place around the town, especially in the Butler Road car park.

“Once again, we will pass on information and footage to the police.”

The number of police patrols in Halstead has now increased, according to Mr Warren, who is also the council’s policing ‘champion’.

He added: “The town council have always pushed for more police in the town, especially since the closure of the police station. In recent weeks there has been a noticeable increase in police presence, especially late at night and in the early hours, and this is welcomed.

“However, they can’t be everywhere and it’s important that residents report incidents when they happen.

“Halstead is a great place to live and we do not want it spoiled due to the inconsiderate and criminal behaviour of a small number of people.”
