A PENSIONER has become trapped in his home after heartless criminals stole the charger to his new mobility scooter.
Norman Adger, 75, who suffers from dementia, lost toes as a baby when his cot caught fire, which means he has reduced mobility and cannot cover long distances on foot.
The pensioner, who lives in Fronks Road, Dovercourt, received the scooter as a Christmas present and uses it to spend time outdoors with his daughter, Sarah Conteh-Adger.
The 49-year-old, who is also a mobility scooter user, said: “ I told my dad ‘The weather is supposed to be really nice, we could go along the seafront’ and he said ‘Sarah, I think you have got my charger’ but I said ‘Dad, I have my own’.
“Obviously someone has come down the side of house, gone through the house and seen he has a scooter charging at the time.
“They have then taken his charger and given him one that is broken.
“The label said 2009 – me and my dad haven’t even had our scooters for a year.
“I am so upset someone could actually take it.”
Following the accident, Sarah offered her father to use her own charger, but it was too weak for his scooter.
She added: “It blew the fuse on mine.
“I am so upset because now I haven’t got a scooter because my battery is broken and my dad’s has been nicked.”
The scooter was a present from Sarah’s sister, Jennifer Hamilton, who has now had to pay £175 for a replacement charger.
Sarah said: “Mentally it has affected him.
“He is not really mobile and I wouldn’t trust him to go out on his scooter on his own, even if his battery worked.
“Because he has got dementia, I take him out which also helps my mum and gives her a bit of a respite.
“I love being with him, looking at the ships along Harwich.
“I can’t believe the heartlessness of some people that can steal from disabled people.”
