A FOOTBALL club has launched a £10,000 fundraiser after sustaining a large amount of damage due to Storm Eunice.

Storm Eunice hit Essex on Friday after the Met Office issued a rare red warning.

Burnham Ramblers Football Club suffered thousands of pounds worth of damages, not covered by insurance, in the storm which battered the county with 90mph winds.

This is something Julia Goodson, who owns the clubhouse bar, says was not needed after Covid with funds already tight.

The winds tore down fences and wrecked brick walls, dugouts, the stadium and goals - more than £10,000 worth of damages.

A power cable also fell down onto the fence line.

Julia said: "Saturday just gone I had to close the clubhouse bar for the day.

"There was a power cable down laying across our fence line and all our power was out for 36 hours so obviously I lost a days trade.

"The game on Saturday was actually away to Halstead but it was called off due to weather.

"There is supposed to be a first team home game in the stadium this Saturday but it depends what we can get made safe by then."

Julia's husband Luke is also the first team manager as well as being a serving soldier in the parachute regiment in Colchester who agreed to give him a day of leave to carry out repairs.

"So its all hands on deck to try and make the grounds safe for Saturday," Julia added.

"Obviously if the game doesn't go ahead it is loss of revenue for the club through the turnstiles and loss for me too.

"Not only this but our under 10's and under 12's are due to play on Sunday.

"We will have to secure fencing and try and repair to broken goals before then too."

Julia put a Go Fund Me page together with help of town councillor Katherine Wilson, a supporter of the club and whose son is the team mascot, in an effort to raise funds towards the repairs.

She has pledged 10 per cent of the clubhouse's takings on Saturday to the fundraiser.
