STUDENTS will be given advice on how to enjoy a safer night out in Colchester as campaigners warn of potential dangers they could face.

It comes as figures from a security firm revealed Essex Police received the second highest number of spiking reports across the country.

Clubbers and pub-goers partying throughout the county contacted officers 149 times in 2020 believing their drinks had been drugged while on a night out.

A man was also the victim of a serious sexual assault last month after an incident on Saturday, January 29 in a lane off Head Street, Colchester.

Now, One Colchester partnership will be taking its #SeeYouSafer campaign to the University of Essex and Colchester Institute to spread the message on how to stay safe.

Representatives from the initiative will be visiting the education hubs to talk students about how planning ahead and looking out for friends can help to stay safe.

The multi-partnership group will include representatives from Colchester Council, the fire brigade and police during the visit at the University of Essex’s campus on Friday.

It will then visit Colchester Institute, in Sheepen Road, next Tuesday and Thursday.

Chairwoman of One Colchester Pam Donnelly said: “Colchester is an inspiring place to study and a vibrant place to enjoy a night out.

“However, we are all well aware of the potential dangers that people could face on a night out not just in Colchester but in any town or city.

“This is why we launched the #SeeYouSafer campaign which aims to help everyone enjoy more from their time in Colchester and it’s so important to share this message with students.”

Dorothy Akuamoa, vice president of student welfare at the university, added: “The safety of everyone involved with the university is our number one priority, so helping to share the messages that form the #SeeYouSafer initiative is important to us.

“Our students benefit from great opportunities to study and socialise in Colchester, enjoying fantastic experiences, but it is valuable to know practical advice and support is available.”
