Residents have been urged to use less water by an environment group which will be running water-saving workshops later this month.

En-form, an environmental information centre on Church Walk, Colchester, has been encouraging people to join their Drop 30 pledge, which asks residents to reduce the amount of water they use by 30 litres per day.

The group will be running a free repair workshop at Colchester Institute on Thursday February 17, where volunteers will show people how to fix leaks from taps and toilets – a common cause of water wastage.

The workshop will run from 10am until 3pm.

Grace Darke, who is a project manager at En-form and will helping to run the water saving workshops in two weeks’ time, said diminishing water stores meant the onus was on residents to save more water.

She said: “Water usage is a very underappreciated resource – the average person uses almost double the amount of water they used on a daily basis in the 1960’s.

“Despite the torrential rain and flooding we see in this area, our ground water stores have limited supplies to see us through each year.”

“Understanding the natural cycle of water and our weather systems is vital in understanding why this issue is so serious.”
