Colchester Council considers hundreds of planning applications every year.

They range from chopping down trees to building extensions, new houses and changes to shops and businesses.

Here, we look at projects decided by the council this week.

Hythe Quay, Colchester

The applicant applied to change use of retail unit Shop 5 in Colne Reach, Hythe Quay.

They sought after transforming the unit from a shop into a hot fast food takeaway restaurant, with alterations to the building including the installation of an extract flue.

However Colchester Council rejected the plans on the basis the proposed flue would be harmful to the appearance of the building and thus harmful to the character and appearance of the area.

Stane Retail Park, Stanway

The impending Greggs store at the freshly-built Stane Retail Park applied to install a new sign and internal vinyl graphics within the unit.

It also sought after installing two digital promotional screens.

Colchester Council approved the plans, but stated planning permission will expire in five years’ time.

High Street, Colchester

A fine jewellery store will install plant condenser units after plans were approved by Colchester Council.

The new Emson Haig store, which was granted permission in September 2021, will build the external units on its roof at the High Street site.

Colchester Council’s planning committee stated permission for the installation will expire in three years’ time.
