A PUB was forced to close its doors to ensure the safety of staff and guests after an incident with a customer who reportedly brandished a gun.

The Rovers Tye, in Highwoods Approach, Colchester, was shut down on Monday as a “precaution” following a situation involving a pub-goer.

Essex Police attended the scene shortly before 4pm after receiving reports of a disturbance, which is now at the centre of an investigation.

It has since been suggested by at least two people the customer in question, who fled before the force arrived, was armed with a gun.

Essex Police has now confirmed they did receive reports the man "may have been in possession of a weapon, described to us as a firearm."

A spokesman for The Rovers Tye added: “We called the police immediately following an incident involving a customer.

“The customer involved left the premises and we closed the pub as a precaution to assist the police with their investigation.

“Our team and customers are all safe and we would like to thank officers for their prompt attendance.”
