Having one of the UK’s biggest roller-skating rink on your doorstep is a privilege few can claim. Located at the bottom of East Hill, it provides a perfect activity for couples and friends alike this romantic season with their ‘Speed Date Skate’ evening on the 12th of February.

During normal times, paying an inexpensive fee allows for 3-hour to 5-hour roller-skating sessions, encouraging a bonding experience with your partner as you navigate balancing on four wheels. In evening sessions, the disco lights are turned on and produce a mesmerising and vibrant display of neon. Adding to the exciting atmosphere, the music played from the DJ booth above the rink which thrives off customer involvement. Songs and announcements can be requested and broadcasted for all to hear.

The immense floor space of Canadian maple wood results in skaters of all standards feeling comfortable in their surroundings in combination with stewards who are happy to assist any in need. Roller-skating games can be enjoyed at intervals in evening sessions, in which skaters can show their skills or participate in games of chance.

Not to be overlooked is the Quasar laser tag, enjoyed by many as a respite from skating. Yet this activity induces more excitement as you chase and evade opponents in a ‘capture the flag’ scenario. Next to the rink, food and drink can be purchased from the kiosk – emulating an American diner. Upstairs there is a bar serving a variety of drinks. There is also an abundance of places for a fatigued skater to sit and observe the rink.

Experienced skater Rachel Budgen said, “I’ve been coming to Rollerworld with my friends for years. The special atmosphere has been the source of many good memories.”

At Rollerworld it’s impossible to be bored. Events like the ‘Speed Date Skate’ are not uncommon and serve to bring the community of Colchester closer together whilst letting people of all ages get active and have fun.
