COUNCIL bosses are hoping to bring popular events back to a town after putting in a bid to allow permission to use a public area.

Halstead Town Council has made an application for a premises licence to bring more events to the town this year.

The application would give the council the green light to use the Public Gardens on Trinity Street for events.

Proposed activities include staging live music events again.

The application is for public events to take place during 2022 organised by the town council and for the “benefit of the community”.

The licence would also be active from midday to 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays.

A consultation is now under way and anyone wanting to make a comment for or against the application needs to do so by February 21 by writing to the council or by emailing licensing@braintree.gov.uk.

The move comes as the council looks to revive events in Halstead.

The number of events held in the town dropped as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic which saw most cancelled due to government restrictions.

Now the town council wants to bring events back and has already taken some steps, including funding which was agreed last month.

The town council approved its budget for the 2022 to 2023 year which includes setting money aside for upcoming crowd-pullers.

It also wants to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which will be held in June.

Town mayor Mick Radley said: “The budget includes funding for a return of all of the normal events and activities that we have enjoyed in previous years plus an additional event to be held on the Queen’s jubilee weekend.

“The council hopes that as we come out of Covid restrictions in the coming months we will be able to hold these events.”
