Educational theatre makes a comeback in Basildon, Essex

The infamous book by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde made its way to the Towngate Theatre in Basildon, Essex.  Many people travelled over to Basildon to watch the performance, and there were many school trips too. The show was very entertaining and full of energy, and I enjoyed it immensely on my visit. The actors were brilliant and the whole show really gripping.  In addition, the cast were very good in terms of getting into their roles.

During the interval, the theatre’s refreshments stall was open offering soft drinks and snacks, they were affordable and a perfect fill me up!  Although the performance had parts in it that were not accurate to the novella, generally it was a very educational performance and in my opinion, the show is a great learning resource for anyone studying this novel for their English literature GCSE.

There were also programmes available to purchase at the price of £3 with a write up on the cast along with a small summary of the play.  The play really gave a true reflection of the emotion that the characters would have been experiencing and this was well received by the audience.  At the end of the show, there was laughter and smiles from the audience.  Be sure to check out the upcoming play inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth also showing at the Towngate Theatre in March 2022.
