COLCHESTER United produced arguably their best away league performance of the season in winning convincingly at Salford City.

The U's were outstanding in both defence and attack at Moor Lane, winning 3-0 in the League Two clash to claim their first victory in eight matches.

Luke Chambers opened the scoring for Colchester on the half hour and Myles Kenlock added to it, three minutes later.

Substitute Corie Andrews then wrapped up their fine win, in the closing stages of the game.

Having managed only nine goals on the road in the league prior to their trip to Salford last Saturday, the U's scored three times.

They registered 14 shots in total, with six coming from set pieces and four from open play.

And according to https://www.whoscored.com/ Colchester counter attacked four times against their opponents - more than any other team in the division, on the day.

Colchester interim boss Wayne Brown said: "We knew they were going to be direct and that we needed to stand up to that, win our individual battles, win our first balls and anticipate second balls.

"But we also knew that the way that they play, there would be opportunities for us to counter attack.

"I thought we did that very well at times and it shows the fitness levels of the players, bearing in mind that they played on Tuesday as well."

Colchester were also effective at the other end, containing their hosts superbly and keep only their fifth league clean sheet of the season.

“It was about keeping that line at the back as high as we could," added Brown.

“We didn’t want to get too deep, especially 2-0 up going into the second half.

“The worse thing we could have done is drop and give them territory and then the second balls that may have fallen to them would be to a player higher up the pitch i.e. in the box.

“I thought our line at the back was good but I thought Sham (George) came out for more in the second half and helped the team from set plays.

“That’s what Sham has got; instincts, reactions and bearing in mind he’s probably had about five days’ training.

"He’s been out for about eight or nine weeks so that’s testament to him."
