COLCHESTER United will check on Cole Skuse today after he was forced out of their win at Salford City with an eye problem.

The experienced midfielder had to go off midway through the first half of the U's 3-0 triumph at Moor Lane and was replaced by Noah Chilvers.

Speaking immediately after the Salford game, Colchester's interim head coach Wayne Brown said: “Cole’s struggling at the moment.

“He still can’t really see out of that eye, so it’s a little bit of a concern.

“We’ll make sure we get him into the right people and get that sorted out."

Brown guided Colchester to victory in his first game in interim charge.

It was the first time the U's had won in first eight league matches and it was achieved without three regular first-team players travelling.

Gazette:

Long-serving defender Tom Eastman, Miles Welch-Hayes and Armando Dobra did not travel to Salford, for the League Two clash.

“I spoke to those three individuals on Friday before we travelled," said Brown.

“Of course, they’re not going to be happy but it’s the nature of the beast.

“When you’re carrying big numbers as we are, when you haven’t got many injuries if any we’re going to have to leave people behind.

“That’s testament to the squad."

Gazette:

Leading scorer Freddie Sears was outstanding for Colchester in their win at Salford.

He provided the assist for substitute Corie Andrews' late strike and earned praise from Brown for his all-round performance.

Brown said: “The way we set up was to counter-act what they did.

“It was also important to hit them when we could and you need energy levels to do that and Freddie (Sears) was absolutely immense from the first minute, running the channels, intelligence which you know you’re going to get from Freddie.

“The work ethic coming from Freddie and throughout the whole squad was absolutely immense.

“The only thing I felt for Freddie was that he didn’t get his goal but he’s set one up and that’s all you can ask from him."

Colchester will be looking to build on their win at Salford when they host high-flying Swindon Town at the JobServe Community Stadium, on Saturday.

Brown added: “We have a full week on the training ground now, which will help.

“I think it’ll give us time to put some real good detail into the lads.

“The games will come thick and fast and it’s important that they get their rest after games and we treat them well."
