BRENDAN Wiredu admits Colchester United's players have to take accountability for the club's poor results that led to the departure of Hayden Mullins.

The U's suffered a fifth successive league defeat in midweek after losing 3-2 at Sutton United, a result that ultimately led to the dismissal of Mullins and assistant manager, Alex Dyer.

Wiredu has thanked Mullins and Dyer for their help with him, during his time playing under them at the JobServe Community Stadium.

And the combative Colchester midfielder says they have to take responsibility, both as individuals and collectively.

Wiredu told Col U TV: "First of all I wanted to say thanks to Hayden and Alex.

"We didn't get the results on the pitch but they are good people and they helped me on and off the pitch and I'm grateful but obviously we have to look forward.

"We have to take accountability because at the end of the day, we're on the pitch and we have to perform and get the three points.

"We have to look at ourselves and see what we aren't doing right on the pitch both as individuals and collectively, but football is a game based on results, so we need to do that."

Wiredu relished playing in a more advanced role for Colchester, at Sutton.

The former Charlton Athletic midfielder was involved in both of the U's goals at Gander Green Lane and wants to get on the scoresheet himself.

Wiredu said: "I enjoyed it - I did a bit last season so I'm used to it.

"It's different because I'm not all action in the midfield but it means I can get closer to Freddie (Sears), get in the box with him and hopefully create a bit more.

"I should have had more goals this season but we've been saying, once I get one, the rest will come.

"We see the fans aren't happy with the performances and rightly so.

"We aren't happy with ourselves, but we want to get out there and put things right and climb up the table.

"We're in a relegation scrap at the moment but with a few wins, we can climb up the table.

"We just need to get those points on the board."
