WAYNE Brown has vowed to do everything in his power to help resurrect Colchester United's flagging fortunes.

The U's promotion winner took training at Florence Park for the first time today since being named the U's interim boss, following yesterday's dismissal of Hayden Mullins.

Brown has been tasked with getting Colchester's season back on track, after a run of six straight defeats in all competitions.

The U's lie third from bottom - three points above the drop zone - and Brown says he will do all he can to help lift them up the table.

Brown said: "The club is ingrained in you when you've given the amount of years that I have done to the football club.

"You're desperate to succeed and you're desperate for the club to do well.

"I'll be doing everything in my power to achieve that, with the help of Joe (Dunne) and Dave (Huzzey) coming on board.

"I feel that there's a real good mix and balance within the set-up now as a staff, to give ourselves the best chance."

Brown has been named Colchester's interim boss for the third time, following the departure of Mullins and assistant head coach Alex Dyer.

The 44-year-old, who played more than 150 times for the U's during his successful playing career, also took temporary charge of the first team last season, after Steve Ball's exit.

That followed his brief stint in interim charge of Colchester, during the 2015-16 season.

Brown will work alongside former U's player, coach and manager Dunne during his interim spell, along with academy manager Dave Huzzey.

"I'm excited to get the opportunity," added Brown.

"There is a downside to it, in that it's never nice people losing their job.

Gazette:

"I know Hayden relatively well from working with him last season and Alex (Dyer) is a top man as well - a very, very nice fella.

"Ultimately, they paid a price for not getting results. "They're the biggest realists there is and they've been in football long enough to know that you need to get results and if they don't come, then you ultimately pay the price.

"But it gives someone like myself the opportunity to come in and try and make the difference and that's what we've tried to do.

"We've tried to hit the ground running, be nice and positive and lively around the group in our preparation for the weekend's game at Salford.

"That's all we're going to do - keep it bright, keep it lively and try and get a bounce and a reaction off the lads, which is what we need to get results on the board - that's our aim."
