CALLS to honour a former international chess player and a Nobel prize winner from Colchester have been made by the town’s High Steward.

Jonathan Penrose, who was born in Colchester, died aged 88 and was Britain’s leading chess player.

Sir Bob Russell says Dr Penrose and his older brother Roger, 90, should now be commemorated in the town, with the latter being awarded a Nobel prize in physics two years ago.

He added naming a road after the brothers who grew up in Lexden Road would be a fitting tribute.

Dr Penrose was a psychologist and university lecturer who competed in chess tournaments as an amateur and went on to become British champion a record ten times.

Prof Roger Penrose holds emeritus positions at Oxford, Cambridge and London universities and is a mathematician, mathematical physicist and philosopher of science.

In 2020, he was awarded a Nobel Laureate in physics for his research work and discovery on black holes in Space.

Sir Bob said: “With the support of Colchester Civic Society I shall be asking Colchester Council that a development be named after the Penrose brothers.

“Both achieved outstanding international recognition, so it is appropriate recognition to both of them should be given in the town of their birth.”
