AN iconic tree on the roof of Colchester Castle has been lit up as the town's Christmas festivities get underway.

The historic sycamore tree on the castle has been adorned with its new bright white lights to complement the town centre’s present-themed Christmas lights and decorations.

It was originally planted by the then mayor’s daughter in 1815 to celebrate the historic victory at the Battle of Waterloo.

It now shines at the top of the castle after the decorations were switched on by the High Steward of Colchester, Sir Bob Russell.

Sir Bob was joined by his two grandchildren, Jessica, 13, and Sam Dines, 9, on Thursday.

Their mother and Sir Bob's daughter, Nicola, helped to replant the tree in 1987 at the age of six - mirroring the legend of the mayor and his daughter in 1815.

She also joined her family for the special moment.

Darius Laws, Colchester councillor responsible for economy, business and heritage, also attended.

Before the event, Sir Bob said: “Colchester Castle is not only the largest keep built by the Normans more than 900 years ago, but also the only one which has a tree growing on top of it. Lighting it for Christmas is simply wonderful.”

The lighting of the tree has been supported by the Welcome Back Fund, which is awarded by central Government.
