COLCHESTER Zoo says it is “delighted” to announce the birth of a squirrel monkey.

The zoo team welcomed the birth after mum, Milu, and dad, Malcolm, saw their youngster born on November 8.

Squirrel monkeys originate from South America and have dexterous hands which help them to move with great agility along branches and through undergrowth.

It means they are proficient in searching for food such as fruit, nuts, seeds and insects.

A spokesman for Colchester Zoo said: “Squirrel monkeys are social animals and can live in large troops of 30 to 50 individuals, so we are delighted to be able to announce the arrival of another addition to our growing group.”

“Milu is an experienced mum, having previously welcomed two offspring who are still here with us at Colchester Zoo.

“For now, Milu will carry the new arrival around on her back until it is strong enough to explore and climb the habitat for itself.

“Milu’s baby is growing healthy and strong and we’re sure it won’t be long before it is sexed by our animal care team.”

Squirrel monkeys are registered as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
