This week residents have been warned to expect “significant” flooding in a notorious spot.

A combination of high tides and rainfall could see Haven Road, in the Hythe, flood twice daily from today through to Sunday.

The warning comes after similar conditions combined at the end of October to cause severe flooding along the road, which runs between Colne Causeway and Whitehall Road.

Colchester Council has urged motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and take alternative routes if possible.

This is when flooding is expected.

Flooding could occur an hour or more either side of the following peak times:

  • Thursday December 2: 10.25pm
  • Friday December 3: 10.41am and 11.14pm
  • Saturday December 4: 11.32am
  • Sunday December 5: 12.01am and 12.21pm

The Met Office weather forecast also shows there is expected to be rain throughout Friday.

The forecast for the next four days is as follows:

Today: Dry with sunny spells in the southwest. Cloudier further northeast with scattered showers. These are likely to fall as sleet or snow inland early on, but turning increasingly to rain through the day. Feeling cold, with brisk winds. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight: Showers easing through the evening, leaving clear spells. Initially cold, but becoming slightly milder later in the night as cloud and outbreaks of rain spread in from the west. Minimum temperature 0 °C.

Friday: Overcast with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, but gradually becoming drier and brighter from the northwest through the afternoon, as winds become light. Less cold compared to recent days. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: A chilly weekend with sunny spells and showers. Strong winds and coastal gales are possible Saturday night into Sunday. Cloud and rain spreading east on Monday.

Simon Crow, Colchester Council portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said: “Unfortunately high tides and rainfall, which are forecast at the end of this week and into the weekend, could see further flooding along Haven Road and some potential disruption to residents, businesses and motorists.

“I would urge people to avoid the area during periods of high tide, when we can expect the flooding to be at its worst, and to use alternative routes if they possibly can.”
